Bondage Porn Or Fetish Art?

fetish-art

Artists Todd Friedman and Hajime Sorayama blur the lines between bondage porn and fetish art.

Bob Guccione was a firm believer in the idea that sex and art could come together. He was also a tastemaker, always at the forefront of new trends. When the kink-positivity movement of the late 80′s and early 90′s began, Guccione, was again at the forefront. Penthouse featured Todd Friedman and Hajime Sorayama, two artists with fresh perspectives on the interaction between sex, art and fetishes. Although Sorayama is a painter and Friedman is a photographer, they both brought a fresh perspective to the field of fetish art.

Sorayama and Friedman are both artists, though their subject matter may not be considered conventionally artistic. Their images are shocking to the average person. But isn’t that the point of art?

The purpose of art is to stimulate feeling and create an emotion where before there was none. Friedman and Sorayama are both masters of this. They balance sex, fetishes, and art spectacularly well. Guccione understood this from the beginning.

Hajime Sorayama is a Japanese artist who gained an international following in the early 1980′s with his first two published books, Sexy Robot and Pin-Up. Sorayama’s work features women in a variety of sexual poses, always with a twist. They are portrayed in cut-out bodysuits of vinyl, latex, spikes and leather, sometimes wearing a thin sheen of liquid and sometimes nothing at all. They are given angel wings, robot torsos, and the bottom halves of horses. Sorayama’s technical skill is matched only by his penchant for the odd.

Todd Friedman’s work is grounded more in reality, but just as extreme. He was a sports photographer whose forays into the world of fetish photography proved very fruitful. As his work became extremely popular in the BDSM community, Todd Friedman became “the” bondage photographer of the decade. His shoots are heavy on bondage, body modification, and S&M themes. Piercings, tattoos, leather and vinyl gear and nipple torture also feature prominently.

I know more than a little about the BDSM community. For instance, I have a black leather suitcase that I like to take on the road. There are tools and props in this case that can cause immense pleasure or unbearable pain. I prefer a secluded destination, perhaps a hotel along an infrequently traveled highway. There, I will decide in the moment: pain or pleasure?
