Monica Bellucci: For Mature Audiences
At 50 years old, Monica Bellucci is a Bond girl fit for more mature audiences.
Hopefully Monica Bellucci will remember that James Bond likes his martini shaken, not stirred. Spectre, the 24th movie in the James Bond series, is in the works. For the first time since the series began, Bond’s co-star is his own age because 50-year-old Monica Bellucci has been cast as the newest Bond girl. This is groundbreaking act for the franchise since only three of the previous 23 Bond girls were older than the actor playing James Bond, and Aliza Gur was only a teenager when From Russia With Love was filmed. Spectre’s James Bond will be Daniel Craig, but the franchise may be making more groundbreaking casting choices in the future with Idris Elba being considered for the role of the next James Bond.
The average age of actors playing Bond is 43, while the average age of women playing Bond girls is 28. While this gap is far too big, it seems that they are taking steps in the right direction by recognizing that age-appropriate stars can be just as appealing as teens. The real question now is how sexy will Bellucci get in this role? One of her breakout roles included her risque part in Malena, and she has never shied away from nude scenes. Will this role be different seeing as her age is being looked at so scrupulously?
The 50 Year Old Bond Girl
Although she’s a household name in France and Italy, she’s still relatively little known. Bellucci starred in Giuseppe Tornatore’s Malena in 2000, which saw her popularity rise, later followed by roles in Irreversible, The Matrix Reloaded, Don’t Look Back and Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ, in which she played Mary Magdalene. Career aside, we present the personal story of Bond’s latest object of affection, a goddess-like Italian bombshell, fluent in three languages who nearly became a lawyer.
Strong Female Leads
Monica Bellucci is not the only sexy older woman to appear on the big screen. From the red carpet to the strip clubs, celebrities know how to fit any role. One of the most notable celebrities to have performed an onscreen strip tease is Salma Hayek in the 1996 film, From Dusk Till Dawn. Salma Hayek stars a club’s star performer, Santánico Pandemónium, who is a seductive vampire that had her shining moment when she danced with a snake. In an interview with IGN, Hayek stated she was apprehensive, “I had to put on a bikini and dance with a snake that’s 11 feet long and make it organic. I went to the extent that I created a relationship with this snake. I mean in my mind it had to have a meaning so that I could go into a trance. I had to go to hypnosis. It was months of preparation for that one dance. And to me it wasn’t a dance, it was a ritual. I investigated snakes and I found that in some cultures it means your inner power. So, that was a dance with my inner powers. I was not just dancing; it had a meaning to it. So, that was really, really challenging.”
